Rec vs travel baseball, explained for Illinois families

Every summer some parent at the park asks if your kid is going to play travel ball. Here is a plain explanation of both paths, so you can decide without pressure.

Rec baseball

Rec leagues are run by park districts, athletic associations and leagues like District 19 in Monroe County or MERBL for middle and high schoolers. Anyone can sign up, teams are usually built from local kids, and games are close to home. Costs are much lower and the season is mostly spring into early summer.

Rec is the right place to learn the game and find out whether your kid loves it.

Travel baseball

Travel teams hold tryouts, usually in summer for the next season (several Metro East clubs held 2026 tryouts in July). Teams play weekend tournaments around the region, often in St. Louis, Chicago-area or Missouri complexes. Many add winter indoor training.

Costs vary widely. Club fees, uniforms, tournament fees, gas and hotels add up. Ask every club for the total season cost in writing, including what is and is not covered.

Questions to ask any travel club

  • What is the full season cost, and what does it include?
  • How many tournaments, and how far away?
  • Who coaches: paid coaches or parent volunteers?
  • How do you handle playing time and pitch counts?
  • Is there indoor winter training, and where?

How to know your kid is ready

They ask to play more, practice on their own, and handle losing without falling apart. If you are the one pushing, another year of rec is not a step back.
